* This just can't get any better, can it? A small, influential, ethnic newspaper in New York, the "Forward" kept The August Story alive by publishing a piece about Hillary's grandmother's having married a Jewish man many years ago.
* Hillary's Jewish-Connection-By-Second-Marriage went, remarkably, unremarked upon through all the years she stood before the Arkansas state flag (which has recently been condemned by African-American leaders in New York as giving off a strong scent of racial bias while waving in the Arkansas breeze) as the Governor's spouse even though her grandmother's married name was Della Rosenberg. Who knew?
* But now that she's running in New York, Hillary is planning to have the annual collectable White House Christmas tree ornament made in the shape of a little dreidel.
* I can remember, as a young boy on Long Island, being sent to Larry's Candy Store by my grandfather to buy him a copy of the Forward (which he pronounced "FAW-Vahds") which was the only newspaper he read because it was the only newspaper written in Yiddish.
* Maybe that's why I have so much trouble dealing with the news media today: My grandfather read his newspaper from right to left.
* Meanwhile, on the Giuliani-Lazio-Pataki-D'Amato front: Governor George Pataki announced he would support Mayor Rudy Giuliani (assumedly with the acquiescence of former Senator Alphonse D'Amato) in his primary race with Congressman Rick Lazio. Sounds like a campaign plan written by Mario Puzo.
* The Lazio campaign was only informed of Pataki's plans via a phone call about two hours in advance of the announcement so they had no opportunity to discuss it, much less negotiate.
* Lazio's folks say he can have the Conservative line on the New York ballot which might cost Giuliani as many as 300,000 votes. They are also pointing out that Lazio did not decide to get into this race at the behest of Pataki or D'Amato so he's not getting out simply because they say so. Stay tuned.
* By helping to avoid a nasty Republican primary, it is just possible that Pataki might be trying to show George W. that he can, at a minimum, make Gore spend it all in New York if not actually deliver the state's 35 electoral votes. This kind of behavior can result in a long, long look for a spot on the ticket.
* Bill Clinton announced he would veto the GOP tax cut bill while on the White House lawn in front of a Marine helicopter which was about to carry him to a campaign appearance, largely at taxpayer expense, on behalf of Al Gore resulting in a picture of the two of them hugging in Arkansas. Remember the picture of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Richard Nixon?
* While checking out the Forward's web site, I spotted an AP wire store about an Muslim support group urging a boycott of Burger King: "We have no beef with Burger King other than the fact that they opened (the restaurant) on stolen land," said [the] executive director of American Muslims for Jerusalem (AMJ).
* Burger King to the AMJ: Well, hard cheese. (Memo to Hillary: That would be traif).
