This was Al "I-Reinvented-The-Vice-Presidency" Gore's week.
- George W. trumped him on most major policy issues;
- He was interviewed for four hours (by the few remaining officials in the Justice Department who were not involved in planning the biggest military invasion since D-Day) about fund raising irregularities in the 1996 campaign;
- Suffered a New York Times Sunday Editorial: "Vice President Al Gore has looked listless and unfocused since he muscled Bill Bradley out of the Democratic race. Some polls show him once again trailing the Texas governor by a significant margin, and his pandering to the Miami Cuban community's view on Elin Gonzlez reinforced the perception that Mr. Gore too quickly puts politics ahead of principle."
- To try and capitalize on Earth day he came out against killer hot water heaters and then appeared on Saturday with Pulitzer Prize shoo-in Leonardo DiCaprio which appearance was knocked off every front page in the country by the very same Elin Gonzlez affair for which he had been excoriated by the New York Times.
- Not only that, but the three people - in the whole United States - who were not told about the raid were the Mayor of Miami, Elin's great uncle, and Al Gore.
