  • "Adams-Morgan " From an Adams Morgan web site:
"Centered around the intersection of 18th and Columbia Rd., Adams Morgan is sometimes called Washington's "United Nations." This multi-ethnic neighborhood is graced with specialty shops, boutiques, galleries, ethnic grocery stores, street vendors and ethnic festivals such as the annual "Adams Morgan Day." (Held on the second Sunday each September.) The main business district is located along Columbia Rd. between 16th St. and Mintwood Pl. and on 18th St. from Columbia Rd. to Florida Ave.

The neighborhood is unique. Adams-Morgan is a multi-cultural city area that specializes in all that is exciting and interesting in an urban culture of Europe or America. Adams-Morgan is a sightseeing attraction in itself for tourists. Historically, it was an upper-class merchant neighborhood. Among the famous who have lived here were Al Jolson and Woodrow Wilson. The turn-of-the-century buildings and homes and the stately trees speak of its rich past. Picturesque residential enclaves include Lanier Heights and Kalorama Triangle.

Today, Adams-Morgan is the home of diplomats, radio and TV personalities, professors, attorneys and government employees. It is located just two miles north of the White House and a short walk from the National Zoo. It is served by the "Woodley Park-Zoo" METRO station on the Red Line."

  • Some smarty-pantses in Washington, DC sometimes refer to Adams-Morgan as "Madam's Organ."
