A Pain in Spain

Wednesday November 28, 2001

  • TITLE: "A Pain in Spain" Obviously a take on the song from the musical "My Fair Lady" by Alan Jay Lerner and Fredrick Loewe which song was titled "The Rain in Spain."

We've been through this before, but as a quick review, "My Fair Lady" is a musical adaptation of the 1912 play by George Bernard Shaw, "Pygmalion" which was, in turn, based upon a story written by the Latin poet Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso 43 B.C. - 17 A.D.) "Metamorphoses."

  • "... style book ..." Most news organizations use one of a number of widely accepted "style books." The most widely used is the Associated Press' version. But some major newspapers have their own.

  • "... Hang out a sign ..." A loose translation is: "Sorry, we are closed. We are not issuing visas. Go visit Yeman or Iraq."

  • "... Google ..." Google.com has become one of the, if not the most widely used search engine on the Internet.

  • "... Mister Softee ..." A brand of soft ice cream which is delivered by trucks slowly roaming through neighborhoods and stopping to sell cups and cones to people who stop the truck along its route.

  • "...Travelogue ..." Here's the link to the preface of My Trip to Paris.
