- TITLE: " THIS is the Millennium Bug " The original "millennium bug" was a programming problem In the early days (the '70s and '80s) computer memory was limited and programmers, to save space in huge databases, coded the year part of dates as two digits - 70 or 80 - rather than four -1970, etc. the "19" was assumed.
When the planetary odometer click over to 2000 those programs read the date as 00, which was interpreted as 1900 because, as we have already pointed out, the "19" was assumed. Billions of dollars was spend in reprogramming to either add two digits or to instruct the program to read "00" as 2000, not 1900.
