Politics Ain't Beanbag
Wednesday, November 17, 1999

  • Title: "Politics Ain't Beanbag" Attributed to Maureen Reagan, daughter of, when she was Co-Chair of the Republican National Committee.

  • "Hillary Clinton's faux campaign…" Neither Mrs. Clinton nor NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani have formally declared their intentions to run for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Daniel Patrick Moynihan.

  • "…put a cot in that house in Chappaqua…" The house which the Clintons purchased is located in Chappaqua, New York north of NY City. Bill Clinton has not formally declared his intention to live there.

  • "Al 'The Womens-Rights Vice President' Gore …" The deal struck between the Congress and the White House to get funds approved to pay some of our back dues to the U.N. requires limits on the amount which can be spent on family planning activities by U.N. agencies.

  • "You would think the National Transportation …" I am not poking fun at the Egypt Air crash. I am amused that the ultra-high-tech analysis of the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder start with them being shipped to Washington in standard Styrofoam coolers wrapped with standard duct tape.

Duct (NOT Duck) tape is defined by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Environmental Energy Technologies Division as tape which is "cloth backed and has a rubber-based adhesive. It comes in a wide variety of grades with different tensile strengths. The classic duct tape is gray, but it is available in many colors."

An experiment in using various tapes to seal ducts led to the conclusion that, "The only ducts that have become leaky have been sealed with duct tape. Most of them showed visible signs of failure within about three days of the start of the test."
