Stimulating Conversation
Monday November 26, 2001
- TITLE: "Stimulating Conversation" A chat about the economic stimulus package which, if the Congress diddles around with it much longer, may not be needed.
- "... Washington Post ..." Here's the link to the Washington Post Editorial from Friday.
- "...malls ..." According to the AP, "Wal-Mart set a record for one-day sales, bringing in more than $1.25 billion Friday at the company's domestic Wal-Mart stores, Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets. Top-selling items included home electronics, toys and small appliances. That figure was up from $1.1 billion a year ago."
Although retailers said traffic remained high, sales slipped slightly Saturday and Sunday. Meanwhile, on-line retailers had the opposite report, again from the AP: "Yahoo! Shopping saw a 70 percent increase in sales on Friday and Saturday," and "Kmart's Bluelight.com saw sales up 48 percent on Friday compared to the same time last year."
- "... giving a man a fish ..." Lau Tzu or Kuan-tzu is credited with the original quotation which is (more or less) "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man how to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
A clever variant I found was: " ... Teach a man to fish and you've gotten rid of him for the weekend."
- "... Alternative Minimum Tax ..." Here's a pretty good primer on the ATM.
- "... Ma Joad ..." The matriarch of the Joad family in the John Steinbeck masterpiece (and the John Ford movie) The Grapes of Wrath. In the movie Ma Joad was played by
Jane Darwell.
