History Repeats. History Repeats.
Wednesday November 14, 2001
- TITLE: "History Repeats. History Repeats." There are probably dozens of illustrations of commanders having been ordered to hold in place and, ignoring those orders, have won brilliant tactical victories.
- "... World War II on the History Channel ..." This is known as "irony" in the comedy biz. The History Channel almost always has something on about World War II.
- "... 10th Mountain Division ..." Here's a good page for those who are interested in the history of this remarkable group of young men.
- "... Riva Ridge ..." This is now the name of a famous ski run at Vail. Members of the 10th Mountain Division started both Vail and Aspen ski resorts and, in fact, helped make skiing a wide-spread winter sport.
- "... Po River ..." Here is a stylized map of the river:

- "... Bastille ..." Other than Singapore, where it is a lay-down guarantee that I will do something which will get me caned, the next most likely place on the planet for me to get into an argument has to be Paris.
- Correction: To everyone who e-mailed to tell me that The Great War ended in 1918, not 1919 as I wrote; thank you. It was a typo.
I had actually looked at a number of documents from the immediate post-war era to see if any official documents referred to The Great War. They didn't.
