And the Beat Goes On

  • Title: "And the Beat Goes On" was Sonny and Cher's first big hit.

  • "Back door neighbor Mary Matalin …" Mary and The James are, indeed, my backdoor neighbors.

  • "It's like going to a Gallagher concert" Gallagher is a social-commentator-comedian who was very popular during the 70's as a not-as-confrontational comic in the George Carlin style.

  • "… Drawers, Men's, Cotton…" This is the traditional US military form of identifying objects. In this case, underpants.

  • "Shot a commercial at …" The McCain campaign used the cemetery as a backdrop for a biography-commercial - used to introduce a candidate in a favorable light (before the other guys do it in a not-so-favorable light).

  • "…Terry Kohler …" Owns a number of companies including North Sails and GeoVoter which is a Mullings sponsor.

  • "… a post-modern version of Ellen Jamesians …" Ellen James was a character in John Irving's first major novel, "The World According to Garp." As I remember it, Ms. James was raped and the rapist cut her tongue out to prevent her from telling who did it. Other people, to show support, cut THEIR tongues out and they became known as Ellen Jamesians. So, the Naomi Wolfians cut out their salaries - Ms. Wolf's monthly fee was slashed from $15,000 to $5,000 recently - as Ellen Jamesians had cut out their tongues.
