The Supporting Cast
Monday, November 11, 2002
- TITLE: "The Supporting Cast" The reason I put the actual hour (11 AM) is because this is Veterans day, ne Armistice Day.
According to the patriotism.org website, "At 5 A.M. on Monday, November 11, 1918 the Germans signed the Armistice." The cessation of hostilities was to occur six hours later, at 11 AM - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Here's their short history of Amistice/Veterans day.
- "...Terrell for Senate ..." Here in beautiful downtown Baton Rouge to check out the last major race of the 2002 cycle. Under Louisiana law, if no candidate received more than 50% of the vote on election day, then there must be a runoff on December 7.
Incumbent Mary Landrieu (D-LA) got only 46% and thus is in a runoff with Republican Suzanne Terrell.
- "... Big Marie ..." From "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," by Victor Hugo. In Chapter 18, Hugo describes Quasimodo - the bellringer - and his relationship with "his girls," the bells. He is now totally deaf and ...
"It is true that their voice was the only one which he could still hear. On this score, the big bell was his beloved. It was she whom he preferred out of all that family of noisy girls which bustled above him, on festival days. This bell was named Marie. She was alone in the southern tower, with her sister Jacqueline, a bell of lesser size, shut up in a smaller cage beside hers... In the second tower there were six other bells, and, finally, six smaller ones inhabited the belfry over the crossing, with the wooden bell, which rang only between after dinner on Good Friday and the morning of the day before Easter. So Quasimodo had fifteen bells in his seraglio; but big Marie was his favorite."
It is very likely this material will be on your final exam.
- "... Election Day Travelogue ..." Here's the link to Chapter One of the Travelogue.
And here's the link to Chapter Two of the Travelogue with lot's of pics!
- "... state legislatures ..." Here's a link to the AP piece from the Washington Times on the state legislative races.
And here's a more sophisticated look by Peter Roff of UPI.

- Mullings' Catchy Caption of the Day:
The photo of Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on the left
was taken on Nov 8, 2002. The one on the right is
dated October 10, 2001. Either:
(a) Ms. Pelosi is getting younger;
(b) there is a painting of her in her house which is aging; or,
(c) she's had some work done.
