Maybe We'll Buy Another House on the West Coast

  • "U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson …" All the applications listed were in common use in 1980-1983. That's less than 20 years ago. Recent U.S. commercial history also includes Wal-Mart which no one in their right mind would have given a chance starting from scratch to go head-to-head against K-Mart, Sears and JC Penney.

  • "On the George W/Andy Hiller front…" This is an absolutely true story. Linus Pauling (1901-1994) won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry for his work in applying the principles of quantum physics to the nature of molecular structures. He was a big-time anti-war activist who worried, publicly, about open-air testing of atomic weapons. He once said: "A couple of days after my talk, there was a man in my office from the FBI saying - Who told you how much plutonium there is in an atomic bomb? And I said - Nobody told me, I figured it out."

  • "Who was the 19th President…" The answer to these two questions are: Rutherford B. Hayes, and Nothing. Other than the fact he is the only President to have been elected as the result of a Congressional commission.

  • "George: A. You don't have any friends…" Following the publication of his book, "All Too Human : A Political Education" which was a tell-most-but-not-all book about his years as a senior apologist for Bill Clinton, Stephanopoulos was not invited to many State dinners.
