- Joseph G. Cannon of Illinois was Speaker from 1903 - 1911 (58th-61st Congresses)
- Nicholas Longworth of Ohio was Speaker from 1925 - 1931 (69th - 71st Congresses)
- Sam T. Rayburn of Texas was Speaker from 1940 - 1947, from 1949 - 1953, and from 1955 - 1961.
The Republicans controlled Congress from 1947 - 1949 and from 1953 - 1955 during which Joseph W. Martin of Massachusetts
served as Speaker. Marting was the last Republican Speaker until 1995 when Newt Gingrich was elected to the post.
