There was a time – not so long ago – when it was illegal to own the phones in your house. You had to rent them from Bell Telephone. In 1984 AT&T was ordered to divest itself of local telephone service and to permit companies like Sprint and MCI to compete for long distance service. The local telephone companies (called the Baby Bells) have since begun to recombine into large regional, national and international phone companies.
