House Managers One, President Coming to Bat

Title: “House Managers One, President Coming to Bat” -- During baseball season, when the announcer gives the score following the first at-bat of the visiting team (the top of the first inning), it is ALWAYS stated: [Visitors] One (or nothing, or three, or however many runs were scored) [Home Team] coming to bat.

“… there wouldn’t be money enough for pizzas at the White House …” -- Monica was first described as having access to the President during the government shut-down when most of the paid staff stayed home. Interns were used to do routine jobs like delivering pizzas to the staff which WAS still working.

“ … why isn’t Senator Tom Harkin sharing a cell …” -- Harkin interrupted the House Managers’ presentation with an objection that the Senate should not be referred to as a jury. His objection was sustained, but I was struck by the fact he stood up and spoke without permission. Harkin is from Iowa where soybean futures are of somewhat more import than one would think they would be to the denizens of the DC jail.

“… First-Sister-Once-Removed …” -- Barbara Boxer’s daughter is married to Hillary Rodham Clinton’s brother..

“… I assumed it had something to do with George Bailey and Clarence the Angel …” -- Two characters from the perennial Christmas movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
