Once again, taking Marietta College to places it's never been before, this doesn't indicate the huge scale of the hole in the mountain behind me. Suffice it to say, it used to be filled with a really, really big statue.
The fencing is up to keep goofballs like me from taking pieces of the destroyed Buddha and selling it on e-Bay.
I have no way of knowing whether this was one of the actual tanks which was used in destroying the statues but it give you some idea of the method.
If you are a child and you go to school (there is a 70% chance you will not) this is the kind of sign - rather than "The Battlin' Buddhas of Bamiyan High Rule!" - which you might well find on the wall.
This is a group of kuchi women - nomads - who have made camp in the gravel bed next to a small river. They were permitted to vote and are guaranteed a certain number of seats in the new Parliament.
This scene has not changed much in the past 500 years, I suspect. When we passed this small wheat farm the first time, the woman was literally separating the wheat from the chaff by tossing the stalks in the air with a rake and letting the wind do its job.
