Keeping Our Eye on the Ball

Monday, September 8, 2003

  • TITLE: "Keeping Our Eye on the Ball" Is a baseball phrase, I do believe. Every kid who ever picked up a bat or a glove in Little League has been told to "keep your eye on the ball."

  • " Washington Post " Here's the link to the piece about the current state of Al Quaeda's ability to inflict harm.

  • " Gillespie " Here's another story about Ed Gillespie which I recounted a few months ago:
When I returned to Washington in January, 1996, Ed was the communications director for the Republican National Committee which was chaired by Haley Barbour.

My job was to be the communications director for Speaker Newt Gingrich's political shop.

In the normal course of events in Your Nation's Capital, someone in Ed's position, upon hearing that someone like me was going to be - not just in the building, but actually on the same floor - would have said something like, "I don't care who he is or who he knows or what he's done before. I'm the communications director and if he gets in my way he'll be a pile of bubbling protoplasm by the time I'm done with him."

"Or," as Dr. Samuel Johnson once said, "words to a like effect."

What he actually did was to come down to my little closet of an office, welcomed me back to Washington, and introduce himself by saying that he wanted me to consider myself an ex-officio member of his staff - meaning I was automatically invited to any meeting he was having if I thought it would be useful to be there.

    See what I mean?

  • Mullfoto of the Day:

This is the kind of thing you waste your money on when you collect $2 million in Indian gaming money, launder it by invoking a loophole in the California campaign finance laws, and try to find ways to use it in the recall campaign.

I found this in Studio 3 at Fox the other night when I was on Hannity & Colmes and I stole it fair and square.
