"...Swiftboat...": Here's a discussion of what Swift Boats were all about:
The US Navy's 50' PCF-71 class Swift Boats were developed by the US Navy for riverine and inshore patrol duties in South East Asia. These boats were developed from existing offshore crew boats designs being used by oil companies to support their oil drilling rigs in the Gulf of Mexico and around the world at that time.
They first entered service in 1965, and saw action throughout the Vietnam war doing interdiction patrols against North Vietnamese waterborne re-supply and infiltration routes into South Vietnam. During Operation Market Time the Swift Boats began to enlarge their patrol areas by moving further up the various rivers in Vietnam and taking over sectors that the PBR boats had previously been responsible for. In addition these coastal patrol boats began to penetrate the numerous rivers of the Can Mau peninsula to stir up the Guerrillas in this region while disrupting the Viet Cong water traffic that ruled the night in many areas of South Vietnam.
