A Big Day for Tom Davis
Wednesday June 20, 2001

  • TITLE: "A Big Day for Tom Davis" This election in Virginia will probably not get very much attention because the GOP won it. If the Democrats had hung on to the seat they already owned, it would be front-cover-of-Newsweek stuff.

  • "… special elections …" Each state has slightly different laws regarding how a vacancy in the U.S. House will be filled. They all, to the best of my knowledge, require a special election. This is different from the way vacancies in the U.S. Senate are filled which generally have the Governor appointing a replacement who must then run in the next regularly scheduled Federal election for the remainder of the term.

  • "… Fairfax County …" The Members of Congress who represent the areas surrounding Washington, DC have an especially difficult time in that, unlike their colleagues who represent far-off districts, these Members are never more than a cab ride away from their constituents.

  • "… get off the Jeffords schneid …" Pronounced "shnide," it is a gin rummy term - or a variant thereof - representing a shut out, i.e. "I was on a schnied when I knocked with two and caught him with 14 points in this hand." If the game is won with one player on a schnied, then the points are doubled.

  •     Mullings' Catchy Caption of the Day:

See No Evil.         Hear No Evil.         Speak No Evil.
