An Important Week
Friday June 15, 2001

  • TITLE: "An Important Week" Given that this week was going to be the beginning of the end of the Bush Presidency - his first trip abroad as President and the Senate and House back in session - it has worked out pretty well.

  • "…deep inside the House Appropriations Committee …" The vote on the this amendment (which was introduced by California Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D) was 34-27 which Fram described as "near-party line." The party split on Approps is 36-27 Republican, but there was no Member-by-Member listing of the vote easily found last night.

  • "… A Senior Administration Official …" We have discussed this before, but we'll go over it again. There are times when senior administration officials speak on-the-record to reporters in which case their statements have the force of Administration policy.

    There are occasions when it is helpful for the press to get a sense of what the Administration is thinking without needing to verify every semi-colon. In those cases a person - who is very well known to the press corps but whose name cannot be used - briefs the press and helps lend context to a story.

  • "…bible of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy …" The Village Voice is the home-town newspaper of Greenwich Village the neighborhood at the south end of Manhattan Island. It is most assuredly NOT a Conservative "Voice."

  • "… The Left was loaded for bear …" The Right is not very happy about this, either. Republicans in the House and Senate worried about the loss of training for pilots. It seems to me that we have pretty good coverage of the Earth's surface from satellites and if the Navy can't find another practice range in TWO YEARS they ought to buy better maps.

  • " … Roy Biggins …" The role played by David Schramm in the television show "Wings."
