How an Adage is Born

Rich Galen

Friday, May 20, 2005

  • "... Adage ..." From the Merriam-Webster Third Unabridged:
    Pronunciation: AD-ij
    Function: noun
Etymology: Middle French, from Latin adagio (I say, from -- assumed -- Old Latin agio).
Definition: A saying typically embodying common experience or observation often in metaphorical form (as it is always darkest before the dawn)

  • "...zetz ..." A Yiddish word meaning, more-or-less, a slap or more precicely a whack (as in If you two don't quiet down back there I'm going to give you both such a zetz) or, as in this usage, a jolt.

  • Mullfoto of the Day

This is one of those things which Mullpal Sonia Holman calls, "The Hand of God:"

A wonderful woman with whom I served in Baghdad needed to have a biopsy last week for a lump in her breast. The test came back negative - no cancer. I was reading her e-mail on my Blackberry when this vehicle stopped in front of me at a traffic light.

God had the woman in this car drive in front of me and caused the light to turn red because he knew there are very few people who keep their digital camera on the front seat next to them for just this purpose.

Being the professional I am, I took the shot, then pulled over to the side of the road and sobbed with relief.

    See a pattern emerging here?
