The Kaddish, and the twelve-month period of mourning that accompanies it, allows the mourner to still hold on to the parent, so to speak, and to take gradual instead of sudden leave of the past beloved generation. Thus, the Kaddish is not only a ritual obligation, but also an instrument of consolation and healthful closing.
