Scuttlebutt

- " Skuttlebutt...": At the suggestion of Mullpal Mary Haase here's the Merriam-Webster entry for skuttlebutt
Etymology: scuttle + butt (cask)
1 a : a cask on shipboard to contain fresh water for a day's use b : a drinking fountain on a ship or at a naval or marine installation
2 : RUMOR, GOSSIP
On assumes, then, that the act of hanging around the water cooler - or water cask - led to the name of the water cask - skuttlebutt - to become the name for the gossip which developed therefrom.
