Tunnels

Wednesday March 7, 2001

  • TITLE: "Tunnels" Tunnels under the Russian Embassy. Tunnels around Dick Cheney's heart.

  • "…Runnel …" The tunnel between England and France under the English Channel is nicknamed the "Chunnel." I have chosen to nickname this tunnel under the Russian Embassy the "Runnel." Why, I wonder, have the French allowed the name of that body of water to remain the "ENGLISH" Channel. Why haven't they demanded it be called, in alternate years, the "FRENCH" Channel?

  • "…Communist Chinese…" Who have our best data on our latest missile warheads thanks to somebody - not Wen Ho Lee, apparently - at the Los Alamos labs.

  • "…I got caught …" This is true. The Mullings Director of Standards and Practices was working in Dallas and I was in Washington for the better part of two years. I used to tell the nurses she was waiting outside to pick me up. But I really just walked across to the parking garage and drove myself home. Then I got caught and my cardiologist told me he would do no more procedures without The M.D.S.& P. actually on the premises.

  • " …Pool Report …" Every day one daily newspaper reporter, one network television crew, one magazine reporter, and some other people are assigned duty to be the "pool" reporters. These are the folks who go into areas which are too small for the entire traveling press corps and report back on what they observed.

Some pool reports, as Frank Bruni's and others', are eagerly awaited for their unique style.

  • "…Monica Lewinsky …" I know you know who she is. I'm just so happy to be tying her name again!

  • Mullings' Catchy Caption of the Day:

"Oh, no. They'll never see this."
