* Among the world’s Jews today is the Day of Atonement
when not only does an individual atone for his or her sins,
but prays for everyone else’s to be forgiven, as well. You can thank me over a lunch.
* Rick Burke’s Sunday NY Times piece about how Republicans are re-assessing the strength of
Bill Bradley against Al Gore for the Democratic nomination contained one extraordinary quote.
Berke quoted Senator Joe Biden, Democrat of Delaware as saying: "With Bill [Bradley], there's
not the Clinton-Gore fatigue.”
* I do not recall a previous instance of a major Republican, much less a Democrat, referring to
Clinton fatigue as “Clinton-Gore” fatigue. Biden’s usage – all the more damning if it was Freudian –
may be the strongest evidence yet of the growing perception of Gore’s electoral weakness.
* I believe the calculus changed at some point late this summer. The question is no longer who
Republicans think they have a better chance of defeating for President – Numb or Numb-er – but
rather whether the Democrats are going to be able to beat George W, no matter which is their
nominee.
* President Clinton wasn’t so fatigued that he couldn’t claim executive privilege, for the umpteenth
time, in the matter of setting loose those Puerto Rican terrorists. Remember the recent
“if-he-doesn’t-want-to-tell-he-must-have-done-it” press reaction to George W’s answers regarding
drug use?
* If we’re allowed to draw conclusions from non-statements, let’s see if this sounds reasonable:
Bill Clinton does not want to release certain documents pertaining to his grant of clemency
because it will prove that he and Hillary Rodham Clinton Rodham did, in fact, discuss the issue in
political terms prior to his announcement, in spite of her denials. She lied to the people of New
York, and they are attempting to cover it up it by the use of the doctrine of executive privilege.
That’s mine. Now, let’s hear yours.
* In an LA Times piece on Saturday regarding the growing importance of the Hispanic vote, the
results of a poll were announced by “Henry G. Cisneros, chief operating officer of Univision and
former Housing and Urban Development secretary in the Clinton administration.” No mention of the
fact that about a week ago he plead guilty to, and paid a $10,000 fine for, having lied to the FBI.
* Noting that Cisneros is the COO of Univision is legit because the Spanish-language network
paid for the poll. But if the guilty plea was left out because it was not germane to the piece – and I
can buy that argument – then how is having been HUD secretary germane?
* This is the true transcript of a conversation on an early flight from Dallas to Washington
yesterday:
Me: Is there a movie on this flight?
Flight Attendant: It’s an oxymoron. It’s called, “An Ideal Husband.”
* The movie, by the way, may have been the first ever to go straight-to-in-flight.
* AP Headline humor: “Museum Honors Titanic Mail Clerks.” One sometimes wonders …”
