* What does the Pope have to do to get coverage during
visits to Latin America? A year ago, he came to Cuba and
the whole Monica/Bill scandal erupted. The Big Three
Networks sent senior correspondents and/or anchors to Havana, from where they had to beat a
hasty retreat as the scandal unfolded.
* Now the Pope arrives in Mexico and what happens? We have indoor-outdoor coverage of Monica
sitting in the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.
* This Is What Happens When There Is No Football, Dept.: I was on MSNBC three times in three
days over the weekend. On Equal Time with Bay Buchanan, I said that Senator Robert Byrd was
a “liberal Senator,” which is a stupid thing to say even for me.
* What I meant to say, of course, is Senator Robert Byrd is a partisan Senator. Inasmuch as
that’s what I meant to say, as far as I’m concerned that’s what I DID say. Heeeeeeeeyyyyy. This
DOES work!
* There is a Fox/Opinion Dynamics poll showing that in a head-to-head battle between Hillary
Rodham Clinton and Elizabeth Dole for President Dole beats Clinton 54-35. That’s Dole beats
Clinton.
* I watched all the Sunday shows and determined, based upon the number who appeared, there
must be 127 Members of the United States Senate.
* The Democrats in the Senate were just lying in wait for the chance to cry “foul” last week. When
they heard Monica was going to be interviewed by the House Managers you would have thought
the Managers had done something REALLY horrible, like urging Senators to drive their own cars.
* The Democrats were jumping up and down saying the House Managers had ignored – and
therefore destroyed – the wonderful spirit of bipartisanship with which the Senators had been
overwhelmed.
* Then comes the aforementioned Senator Bob Byrd who – out of the blue – decides he’s had
enough and is going to introduce a resolution to end The Trial today. Where was the discussion?
Where was the meeting in the Old Senate Chamber? Where was the careful, backroom
negotiating? Where, by the way, is the simulated outrage about Byrd moving ahead with his
motion without checking with the Republicans? No where. That’s where. It’s only partisan when a
Republican does it.
* Here’s why timing is so important: Bernard McGuirk, Imus’ executive producer, spent Friday
morning in front of the Mayflower Hotel. If he had only known Monica was going to be staying
there 48 hours later, I guarantee we would, this morning, have had audio – muffled by the couch
behind which Bernard would have been hiding – of the interview between Monica and the
Managers.
* The Democrats on the weekend chat shows were describing the interview between Monica and
the Managers like it was a scene out of Midnight Express. After I complained about that
characterization on the air, MSNBC included the phrase “and her lawyers” to their description of
Monica meeting with House Managers.
