    Some Good Stories

    Friday May 2, 2003

  • On the Housekeeping front, the end of April produced the following two good stories:
  • You remember I pledged to donate 10% of everything generated by the subscription drive between two excellent foundations: the John Alvis Memorial Scholarship Fund at Texas A&M University; and the Albert Pfister Cardiac Surgery Fellowship at the Washington Hospital Center.
  • I am, today, sending two additional checks in the amount of $200.30 to each of those two charities.
  • You can feel good about that fact that you have helped some young person get a college education; and you have helped some person have a new chance at a productive life through cardiac surgery, in the amount of $3,154.50.
  • No organization - NONE - has ever had better readers or better supporters than Mullings.
  • Thank you.
  • Along those same lines, April showed the largest-ever number of page views to the Mullings website, averaging 4,636 per day - seven days a week. The mullfotos, the catchy captions, the travelogues, and the links are there for you. All you have to do to get to the Secret Decoder Ring is to click on any HIGHLIGHTED word or phrase.
  • Another good story: Last weekend one of those large dinners took place in Washington - the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Many, many celebrities attend as the guest of some organization - often the news division of a major network.

  • Two of the celebs who showed up were Drew Carey and Kelsey Grammar. They were oohed and ahhed over by the journalists and guests at the dinner, but that's not what is important.

  • On the day before the dinner - a week ago today - the two of them showed up in Washington and, without fanfare, without camera crews, without reporters, without press agents, without anything but their patriotism, they respectively spent about three hours apiece at Bethesda Naval Hospital and Walter Reed Army Hospital.

  • According to people who were there, they posed for photos, signed autographs, talked to the wounded service members, sat with their spouses or their moms and their dads and chatted about whatever THEY wanted to chat about.

  • In this age of Garafalo-Sheen-Penn-Maines using their anti-war sentiments to generate fame and enhance their careers, these two men - these two major stars - went, quietly, to express their thanks.

  • Final good story: Is there anyone in the country - in the WORLD - who doesn't think that President George W. Bush looked perfectly at home as he walked from the airplane to be mobbed by a gloriously happy crew in full flight gear with his helmet tucked under his arm?

  • Picture Bill Clinton walking across that flight deck. Can't do it, can you.

  • Another point: Even before The President began his speech on the flight deck of the Abraham Lincoln, the crew began to cheer. The President became emotional - as he does around the brave men and women of the armed forces - as he stood before them and thanked them.

  • The President said in his speech, "When I look at the members of the United States military, I see the best of our country, and I am honored to be your Commander in Chief." It was clear that the sailors aboard the Abe Lincoln, are honored to serve under him.

  • The sailors aboard the Abe Lincoln want to get home. They've been at sea for 10 months. 150 of the sailors aboard became dads while she has been at sea.

  • The biggest cheer went up when the President said, "Americans, following a battle, want nothing more than to return home. That is your direction tonight."

  • We pray they are granted, in the time-honored tradition of navies everywhere, Fair Winds and Following Seas.

  • On the to the Secret Decoder Ring page today: A group of photos from the President's arrival on the deck of the carrier, including one of National Security Advisor, Dr. Condoleezza Rice. Take care to note the look of absolute joy on the President's face as he shakes hands with members of the flight deck crew. Also the "Pool Report" of the President's afternoon.
