First, Scooter Libby.
Regular readers may remember that I wrote, on January 17, 2007 prior to the beginning of the trial that President Bush should Pardon Scooter Libby.
I was told by many that Libby's legal team thought (as did much of an increasingly disappointed Washington Press Corps over the past 10 days of jury deliberations) that special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald had, at best, a weak case; that a Presidential pardon implies guilt on the part of the pardoned individual; therefore (to complete the syllogism) they did not ask for and would not accept a pardon.
The jury found Libby guilty on four of the five counts brought against him. His lawyers said they would ask for a new trial and, failing that, would appeal.
One simple signature by President Bush and this all goes away.
The press corps got its fill of the kind of he-said-she-said that goes on between senior White House aides and senior Washington Newslebrities; the prosecution got its conviction; Libby had his day in court.
There is no longer a presumption of guilt from which Libby has to be protected. He was found guilty.
The President should do the right thing, issue a pardon this week and have done with it.
Now, to Ann Coulter.
If you are just getting back from the funeral of Anna Nicole Smith and missed it, Ann Coulter made big headlines by using the term "f**got" in the same sentence as the name of Democratic Presidential candidate John Edwards.
From the full-throated outcry from the Left and the Right, you would have thought she was John Lennon telling Johnny Carson that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus.
Edwards, for his part, immediately put a link to it on his campaign webpage as a shameless fundraising tool:
We must show that inflaming prejudice to attack progressive leaders will only backfire.
Can you help us raise $100,000 in "Coulter Cash" this week to keep this campaign charging ahead and fight back against the politics of bigotry?
Coulter is a cunning businesswoman. According to Amazon.com she has published six books. I would bet there is a seventh book in the offing and her performance at the Conservative Political Action Committee event was nothing more than hype for that.
As evidence, Coulter was booked on both Hannity & Colmes on Fox and on the Paula Zahn show on CNN for Monday night.
More power to her. As of this writing I have published only zero books.
Ann Coulter, it turns out, is a cottage industry in the publishing biz. A brief visit to the local bookstore here in the People's Republic of Alexandria, Virginia found four books BY Ann Coulter and at least two books ABOUT Ann Coulter.
One is named: Brainless: The Lies and Lunacy of Ann Coulter by Joe Maguire (who was a financial writer for Reuters and got fired after his book was published).
The other is named: Soulless: Ann Coulter and the Right-wing Church of Hate by my former Fox debate partner, Susan Estrich.
So, with a minimum of research - a click on Amazon; a Google search; and a trip to an actual bookstore - we have found at least three Liberals (including Edwards) who are actually making money on Ann Coulter's name.
Maguire's and Estrich's books contain the words: Brainless and Soulless. Coulter's book titles contain the following words: Godless, Treason, Lies, and Slander.
Do what I did. Walk through the "Political" section of your local book store. See if you find one with a title like, Everything's Going Fairly Well and I'm Pretty Happy About It.
That book isn't being published.
On the Secret Decoder Ring page today: Links to the Edwards fundraising appeal, two links to Coulter's bio, and an astonishing Mullfoto of the cover art of Coulter's and Estrich's books. Also a Catchy Caption of the day.
