The Things You Learn on the Road

- TITLE: "The Things You Learn on the Road" It is very important to leave the cozy confines of the Beltway. Otherwise you run the risk of your thinking being determined by talking with other people who live and work in the area of the Beltway who have talked exclusively to other people who live and work ...
- "... Bill Clinton ..." When Clinton was deciding where to put his taxpayer-funded office, he chose extremely pricey space near Carnegie Hall in midtown Manhattan. After squeals of outrage by everyone, he decided on new space in Harlem.
- "... five minority candidates ..." In addition to the three mentioned in the column, Tony Garza was elected Railroad Commissioner and is now Ambassador to Mexico and Al Gonzales, Texas Supreme Court, now White House Counsel.
- "... 130 years ..." In my speech to the seminar attendees (seminarians?) I suggest they all write down the number 2132 which, I said would be 130 years from the November elections when they might let the Democrats have control back. That, I said, or they could write another verse to the Zeger & Evans song, "In the Year 2525."
Zager & Evans Riff:
Zager & Evans had only that one hit, the complete title of which was, "In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)" with exordium being defined as "the introductory part of a discourse or composition" and terminus being defined as the place where, once having reached it, you may safely unbuckle your seatbelt and turn on your cell phone.
One of the many times I had to go to the hospital for my very excellent Cardiologists to dig around in my cardiac arteries, my younger brother was driving me at about 5:30 in the morning. The song "In the Year 2525" was on the radio. When they got to this verse:
In the year 9595
I'm kinda wondering if man is gonna be alive
He's taken everything this old earth can give
And he ain't put back nothing
I said to my brother, "Do you think the conversation was like this when they got to that part?
EVANS: Hey, Denny?
ZEGAR: What, Rick?
EVANS: What rhymes with "give?"
ZEGAR: Nothing
EVANS: Perfect!
I have always been at my most clever just before undergoing anesthesia.
- "... Al Sharpton ..." If you are a Democrat all things are forgiven. Sharpton is now running for President as a Democrat. I went to his website and - I know I'm going to rue this act - signed up for e-mail news about the campaign.

In Austin there is a great BBQ place called "The County Line." At The County Line that have this huge plastic rib which is called, colloquially, "The Big-Ass Rib"
